NASC Engages Expatriates To Train Staff

In a bid to deepen democracy, the National Assembly Service Commission has commenced the training of no fewer than fifty staffers of the House of Representatives.

Among the trainers were foreign experts and their Nigerian counterparts charged with the task of enhancing the capacity of the legislative workers to meet international standards in legislative processes

The Executive Chairman Commission, Alhaji Ahmed Amshi who spoke during the opening ceremony of a workshop themed: “Enhancing Capacity for Legislative Services” stressed the need for continuous capacity building to enhance the productivity of staffers of the National Assembly.

The Capacity building workshop was organised by the House of Representatives in Collaboration with Sahl Human Resources

Represented by the Commissioner Representing North East Abubakar Tutari, he maintained that training and retraining of staff is imperative for enhanced productivity and national development.

He assured that the Commission would continue to introduce initiatives that will improve legislative processes to enhance the performance of the national assembly.

He said: “Training is a priority under my tenure as chairman of NASC, because it is only in training and retraining that we can develop the capacity of our staff and the need to develop capacity cannot be over-emphasized.

“Where we are in National Assembly is where laws are made for the country; these laws are made by elected politicians who may or may not have the knowledge or expertise of lawmaking.

“For them to be successful, they will need your (Legislative support staff) contribution and guidance and so the need the necessary training in law drafting for good governance is very necessary. National Assembly Service Commission will at all times, give support to issues of staff training to develop capacity.”

The Clerk House of Representatives Dr Yahaya DanZaria pointed out that the best way to attain optimal performance and productivity is through the empowerment of staff.

According to him, the need to strengthen the capacity of staff to be in tune with legislative procedures prompted the training which he believed would help them be up to date with international best practices in legislative matters.
